Gilgo Beach..Long Island, New York

Going to the beach in New York is such a surreal experience. Really hard to put into words. Its an adventure as much it is another world unto itself. Something really cool about lounging around lazily on the beach and bodysurfing in the ocean all afternoon, and then driving back into the city later that same evening.
It is really a lot cooler at the beach too compared to Manhattan. These pictures were taken on Friday afternoon the 27th of May, the start of memorial weekend. Going to the beach seems like a real event in ny and memorial day is a huge deal. Its the official kickoff of the summer season and there's a definite excitement in the air...all the summer shops, restaurants, stands, stores getting stocked and ready. Lots of cool beach, boating, and shore clubs with concerts and big events planned all prepping for summer. These pics are of the bayside of Gilgo beach on Long Island. This place was really cool. Its a lot like silver strand coronado in San Diego. The beach is on one side and there's a tunnel under the road leading here to the bay/boardwalk. If you have a boat you can just drive up, dock, and have a BBQ or go to the beach. The coolest thing about this place is the view and your surroundings. From here you can see all the various bays and little islands throughout Long Island. Out here it is pretty remote and natural yet it is an awesome contrast because on clear days(it was perfect when we where there) you can actually see the skyline of the city far off in the distance. If you look closely at the bottom picture you can get a sense of this. I think next summer I'll definitely be going back for some more New York beach fun.
